How to read a historic map carefully
Historic maps should distinguish exact sites from approximate locations. Road alignments, addresses and property lines change, and some surviving captions provide relative rather than surveyed locations. Even with those limits, connecting the records geographically reveals how Hockinson's school, farms, homes, churches, mills and stores related to one another.
