One of Hockinson's lesser-known infrastructure stories survives under the historical name China Ditch.
A historic photograph is captioned “China Ditch looking north along Northeast 172nd Avenue.” A newspaper account preserved with the local historical records describes Chinese laborers hand-digging a drainage ditch in the Hockinson area.
The drainage work mattered because low-lying wet ground could limit farming and access. Hand-dug drainage helped make some land more usable for agriculture, turning the ditch into part of Hockinson's working landscape rather than merely a geographic curiosity.
The historical name should be understood in the context of the period in which it was used. The surviving record is also evidence of Chinese labor in a community history more commonly told through Finnish and Scandinavian settlement.
The photograph's location along Northeast 172nd Avenue makes the ditch especially useful for reconstructing a historic Hockinson map.
