Finnish settlement in the Eureka era
A local settlement record says the community then known as Eureka was settled about 1862 by Swedish-Finno sailors and describes early residents as Finns from the mainland and Swedish-speaking Finns from the Åland Islands. John and Johanna Nelson
Individual family histories give that broad immigration story human detail. John Nelson came to the United States from Finland in 1876, first settled in Astoria and reached the Hockinson area in 1879. Work and daily life
Other historical accounts describe immigrants who entered school speaking little or no English and families who made their living through logging, farming, fishing, trades and small businesses.
The Finnish Kaleva community
Finnish community life became highly organized. The United Finnish Kaleva Brothers and Sisters created a Hockinson chapter in 1924, and its hall later supported dances, music, a choir, a drill team, a junior lodge and community events. Read about the Finnish Kaleva Hall.
The result was not simply a cluster of Finnish surnames. Finnish culture became part of Hockinson's institutions and community identity.
