John and Johanna Nelson's story connects Finnish immigration, pioneer life and the modern Hockinson map.
A historical newspaper clipping dated February 26, 1976, shows John and Johanna in front of their Hockinson home near what became John Nelson Road. According to the account, John came to the United States from Finland in 1876, first settling in Astoria, Oregon. He came to Hockinson in 1879 and married Johanna in 1880.
Johanna served the neighborhood as a midwife for many years, an especially important role in a rural community where medical care could be distant.
The account also remembers John building a roughly 20-foot sailboat at home. Around 1900, he hauled it by wagon from east of Hockinson to Vancouver and used it in connection with commercial fishing on the Columbia River, reaching markets through the Willamette and Portland.
The Nelson story illustrates how early Hockinson families were connected to a much larger regional economy even while living in a rural farming community. John Nelson Road still carries that family name into the present.
