Hockinson's school district developed by bringing several neighboring rural school communities together.
Erik Mattson's “Hockinson School History” says Mountain View and Salmon Falls consolidated with Hockinson before students moved into the next new building. The same history records that Fifth Plain consolidated with Hockinson in 1929.
That 1929 change also altered the district number: Hockinson District No. 8 became District No. 94.
The account preserves another memorable detail from the Fifth Plain transition. Teacher Catherine Calleary was selected for a group of students who had a reputation for being difficult, and the story says she won their respect.
School consolidation changed more than a number on paper. It affected transportation, staffing, building needs and the identities of small rural school communities. Those changes helped create the larger Hockinson school system recognized today.
